British Museum Acquired Japanese Handscroll

This time, British Museum has acquired one of the rarely found 50 feet Japanese Handscroll. However, before this, authorities have planned to ship the handscroll from the city of London to the city of New York. In fact, the Handscroll had certainly undergone for transatlantic sale at Antique Dealers Show and Haughton Fine Art. The Handscroll is vividly illustrating the historical visit of one of the American Commodores named Matthew C Perry, along with his fleets to Japan in the year 1854. In the portrait, Matthew C Perry, along with his fleet were signing for Kanagawa Convention, which opened at Japan to facilitate foreign trade for first time during the two present centuries.

Japanese painters have kept proper records of the landing of US fleet, entertainment of Perry and other officials, presentation of railway model of United States and encounters of US marines with sumo wrestlers. The extraordinary details of almost every scene have revealed huge curiosity of Japanese towards the visitors of America and other countries. Daniel Crouch in association with well-known Maggs Brothers has exhibited the rare Japanese handscroll. Both of these rare-book dealers in the city of London have bid with a huge asking rate of £555,000 or $890,000. However, British Museum pounce the handscroll with a highly acceptable offer before it has left out from the shores.
